viola d'amore

viola d'amore

This viola d'amore was converted into a five-string viola sometime in the 18th C. The remains of the original long pegbox shows unmistakeable traces of the set-up for the sympathetic strings, which once ran behind the fingerboard. It has been left in this condition. Several of the original peg holes, now not needed, were sealed with wooden plugs, visible on the photos above.
